A community of faith rooted in the islands of Tonga since the first Marist missionaries arrived in 1842.
The Catholic Church's presence in Tonga began in 1842 with the arrival of Marist missionaries led by Bishop Pierre Bataillon, S.M., appointed as the first Vicar Apostolic of Central Oceania. From these early beginnings, the faith took root among the Tongan people, growing steadily despite the challenges of a predominantly Methodist society.
The Church adapted to the unique culture of Tonga β a kingdom with deep traditions of faith, family (famili), and community. Catholic missionaries built schools, hospitals, and parishes that became cornerstones of Tongan life.
Marist Bishop Pierre Bataillon establishes the first Catholic mission in Tonga as part of the broader Pacific vicariate.
A dedicated vicariate for Tonga is created, recognising the growing Catholic community across the island groups.
The vicariate is expanded to include Niue, reflecting the broader Pacific mission.
Pope Paul VI elevates the territory to a full diocese by the bull Prophetarum voces on June 21, 1966.
Bishop Patelisio Punou-Ki-Hihifo Finau, S.M., becomes Bishop β a landmark for the local Church.
Soane Patita Paini Mafi becomes Bishop of Tonga β the first diocesan priest to hold this position.
Pope Francis creates Cardinal Mafi as the first-ever Cardinal from Tonga.
The Malia Tupu 'ImΔkulata (Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception) stands on Vuna Road in Nuku'alofa. Also known as the Cathedral of St. Mary, it is the mother church of the diocese and seat of Cardinal Mafi. The diocese also has the Minor Basilica of St. Anthony of Padua in Nuku'alofa.
The Diocese of Tonga is immediately exempt to the Holy See β not belonging to any ecclesiastical province. Our mission is guided by priorities of evangelisation, service to the poor, family life, and youth formation, always rooted in Tongan culture and identity.
As an island nation on the frontlines of climate change, the Diocese is a strong voice for environmental justice and the dignity of Pacific peoples β concerns championed by Cardinal Mafi on the world stage.
